date of foundation

The Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS) emerged in the nineteenth century among Norwegian immigrants to the United States.

The first congregations were formed in 1844 near Madison, Wisconsin. The synod was officially founded in 1853 and has remained faithful to Scripture and tradition. In 1918, it was reorganized as the Norwegian Synod of the American Evangelical Lutheran Church, which changed to the Evangelical Lutheran Synod in 1957.
